“…the tendency to find meaningful patterns in meaningless noise... I argue that our brains are belief engines: evolved pattern-recognition machines that connect the dots and create meaning out of the patterns that we think we see…”

-Michael Shermer, Scientific America.

Patrick Gomez 4 Sheriff is electrified to present PATTERN RECOGNTION, by Sara Gernsbacher, the artists debut solo exhibition.  Gernsbacher will present a new series of paintings constructed of pigmented silicone, a material generally used as an integral component in mold-making.  The works shown here up-end the intended application of the material as a vehicle in the process of duplication, and explore the potential of it as a medium in its own right.  The resulting works showcase the silicone not for its unique ability to masterfully mimic all other mediums and objects, but for its tactility and elasticity; traits that painting in and of itself have a difficult time replicating.  The notion of  Pattern Recognition becomes quite palpable when one considers the inherent traits of the materials in relation to the intended function of the application. The works own making can be seen in glimpses of the patterns and impressions left in the silicone, while the overarching material and formal explorations mimic a history of painting that is less concerned with pictorial representation then with abstraction

Sara Gernsbacher received her BFA from Bard College in 2011, where she studied under Stephen Shore.  Her work was included in the exhibition My Old Friend, My New Friend, My Girlfriend, My Cousin, and My Mentor, organized by JPW3 at Shoot The Lobster, in New York.  The Gallery will host a reception for the artist from 6-10pm and will serve light refreshments and Tecate.
