PATRICK GOMEZ 4 SHERIFF is ELATED to present YANYAN HUANG: HERE ABSENCE REMAINS.  The Gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20th at 7pm.

“An event, which is now present, was future and will be past”

“At any moment I have certain perceptions, I have also the memory of certain other perceptions, and the anticipations of others again.”

“Our ground for rejecting time is that time cannot be explained without assuming time. But may this not prove - not that time is invalid but rather that time is ultimate?”

Excerpts from “The Unreality of Time” by John Ellis McTaggart (1908)

Should time be so abandoned?

A mark once made cannot be withdrawn.

From emptiness comes an obsessive ordering of silent acts, of acts without intention, flowering into full-fledged directional compositions. And on and on it persists in perpetual sostenuto: sustained beyond a gesture’s full value, until purpose no longer serves its extension, until the present becomes near-past and the future a distant memory. Layers of gestures deconstruct, destroy, and ultimately encrypt original sense stimuli into mnemonic devices within a ritual of meditative processing. Mere residual evidence; the physical a reflection of visible processing of bodily mechanizations; of nervous calibration between the electrical, endocrine, pituitary systems. Each composition illustrates its duration fixed as an ultimate fact, as well as the perceptions of the present, memory, and anticipation of future. After destruction, after forgetting, substances still exist in vapor, in molecules that we breathe in. Here, absence remains.
